A career is more than its latest stack. This is the through-line from interactive systems and client work to product engineering, leadership, and independently built software.
Career portrait
My path into product engineering started with military service, art school, art direction, immersive 3D systems, full-stack web development, motion, client work, and software that had to communicate visually. The tools changed. The work kept asking for the same combination: understand the problem, make the interaction clear, and stay with the difficult parts until they work.
Archive mapEarly interactive practice
Art direction, studio sites, animation, PHP and MySQL applications, and front-end work taught me to treat visuals, behavior, data, and delivery as parts of the same system.
Studios, clients, and technical teams
The professional record spans studios, agencies, client teams, General Dynamics, and the U.S. Army. Those different environments broadened the work and made collaboration and calm execution part of the craft.
Product engineering and leadership
At Grindr, Bridg, Bosch, Revenue.io, and Yubico, the focus moved toward operational interfaces, analytics, design systems, frontend modernization, team leadership, and software built to be maintained.
Current independent work
Current work combines product engineering with applied AI, geospatial systems, and audio software. The same attention to interaction, clarity, and craft now operates across full product systems.
Selected archive / 2006–2007
An early interactive-development project built with ActionScript 2, video, XML, and multi-user technology. The studio site received a 2006 Graphic Design USA Certificate of Excellence in Communication and Graphic Design and was named a 2006 Webby Awards Honoree.

Carl’s contribution
Carl contributed interactive development using ActionScript 2, video, XML, and multi-user technology. The two awards recognize the site and its team rather than sole authorship by any one contributor.

These surviving artifacts show the range behind the current practice: interactive development, visual systems, mobile UI, campaigns, and product storytelling. Together, they trace the visual and technical instincts that still shape Carl’s work.
Interactive developer
Developed a working, finished interface spanning evidence review, event organization, clip editing, case collaboration, and controlled sharing.
Freelance senior designer
Homepage design focused on explaining the hosted-commerce offer and moving visitors toward a free trial.
Interactive developer
Implementation work on a promotional experience combining movie matchups, voting, monthly winners, and social sharing.
Front-end contributor
Front-end implementation and revision work for a promotional site. This is site work, not game-development credit.
Interactive team contributor
ActionScript 3, animation, and interactive-design work created within the Oniracom team.
Art direction and design contributor
Art direction and iterative design work across homepage and interior-page concepts for the music initiative.
Mobile UI designer
A set of interface directions exploring social listening, conversation, and music playback on early smartphones.
Front-end contributor
Front-end contribution to a scroll-driven anniversary experience combining Superman history, Man of Steel facts, canvas navigation, layered parallax scenes, and animated character states.
Web contributor
Web implementation using CoffeeScript, Node.js, Jade, JavaScript, Canvas, CSS, and social integration.
Web contributor
Web contribution to a scroll-driven product microsite with layered scenes, interactive benefit hotspots, Gold and Silver product states, eased navigation, and animated composition graphics.
Programming instructor
Hands-on programming instruction using Scratch (MIT) and JavaScript, helping students turn ideas into working interactive projects.
A wider look
These smaller frames fill in the space between the feature projects: immersive systems, full-stack campaign work, art direction, commerce, entertainment, and independently built products. The originals are modest in size, so they are presented as an editorial contact sheet rather than stretched into hero images.

Earlier professional work
The path spans studios, agencies, client teams, software organizations, and technical environments. The work above shows how that range became the practice Carl brings to products today.
Earlier professional work crossed interactive production, web design, animation, and front-end development for studios, agencies, and client teams.
Work with TASER / AXON, General Dynamics, and the U.S. Army brought experience with demanding technical environments, operational workflows, and complex teams.
How people describe the work
“Carl's experience, persistence, and (most of all) calm always saved the day.”
Todd Rimes, teammate
“Carl’s been a true mentor.”
Jason Conover, direct report
“Carl Welch is a rare breed of web expert. He has his left and right brain working in sync to deliver stellar web designs and functionalities.”
Jacob Tell, client
Where it leads now
The recent case studies show the current architecture and product judgment. The archive explains where the interaction instincts, visual range, and working style came from.
